Knox County Schools is seeking qualified applicants for the following position:
Supervisor of Transportation Operations
Location: Central Office
Job Summary: The Supervisor of Transportation Operations primarily oversees a bus system that moves about 25,000 students to and from school each day. The supervisor manages a staff that oversees the development and assignment of bus routes to over 70 independent contractors that provide about 350 buses and drivers to the Knox County Schools each day. He or she also develops and manages an $18 million budget, oversees contract development, payment of contractors, bus driver applicant approval including all areas of compliance with state and federal bus driver qualification requirements, customer service operations, assignment of school bus aides and routing operations. When difficulties occur with the transportation system, the supervisor is the person who finds solutions and works with contractors to provide necessary services.
Qualifications: Bachelors degree in transportation logistics or other job related area
Five years of job related experience with increasing levels of responsibility preferred
Valid Drivers License, CDL with P and S endorsements preferred
Knowledge of provisions of the Tennessee Motor Vehicle and Education Codes and the Department of Transportation Drug and Alcohol Testing procedures applicable to the operation of vehicles in the transportation of pupils; safe driving practices; principles of efficient and economical bus routing techniques and scheduling of employees; rules and regulations affecting District Transportation Department; geographic and topographic characteristics of the community served by the District; principles of dispatching and scheduling of school buses; training, supervision, and evaluation techniques; and record-keeping techniques.
Essential Functions/Job Duties: Develop and manage departmental budget
In coordination with appropriate staff, develop and oversee execution of transportation contracts
Hire and promote personnel within the division
Coordinate services with school bus contractors and other service providers for the school system
Oversee operation of the driver random drug and alcohol testing pool
Review and approve all bus driver candidates for addition to the approved driver roster
Provide input for bus schedules and oversee staff schedules
Create and submit reports as required to the Board of Education, Superintendent of Schools, the Chief Operating Officer and the Director of Transportation, Enrollment and Zoning.
Document all accidents and follow-up as required with law enforcement and state and federal regulatory agencies
Oversee customer service operations and ensure that all calls for service are addressed
Respond to news media requests regarding transportation related issues
Compensation: FLSA: Exempt
Salary Range (80,000 - $95,000) Commensurate with Experience
