General Function: The Mandela International Magnet School (MIMS) is a fully authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) World School for the Middle Years Program (MYP 7-10) and the Diploma Program (DP 11-12). The school was birthed in school year 2014-2015 with 50 students in each of grades 7 & 8 and has grown a grade per year so that in school year 2017-2018 it will be a 7–11 school with no more than 50 students per grade level. We will graduate our first class in May 2019. MIMS seeks a math teacher who specializes in one or more math content areas of interest and can connect themes, concepts and thinking strategies across disciplines. As a globally-minded school, we seek a math teacher who has an international perspective and contributes to building the school culture where diverse cultures are welcomed and where students are encouraged to be curious, rigorous, kind and fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical and psychological growth. We seek a math teacher who likes to develop interdisciplinary units with colleagues in other disciplines. We seek a math teacher who can teach within the IB framework, which includes courses at the High Level (advanced) and Standard Level (regular) and establish strong relationships with students both in and out of the classroom.
Minimum: Four-year degree and valid New Mexico Secondary Teaching License (or the ability to obtain such), with appropriate endorsements for the courses being taught.
Preferred: IB Experience, international experience, bi or multi-lingual, and at least two years previous teaching experienced in middle and/or high school.
Knowledge/Skills and Abilities: MIMS seeks a math teacher who demonstrates general knowledge of mathematics curriculum and instruction, and has the ability to blend competencies, i.e. Common Core standards with IB standards. We seek a math teacher who is solution-oriented and can blend autonomy and accountability and who has the ability to exercise considerable and sound judgment to instruct students and influence their character. We seek a math teacher who is a learner and thrives on continuous improvement, who remains current with the latest developments in the profession. We seek a math teacher who has a fluent use of technology as an instructional tool for learning and who is culturally competent, meaning they deal easily with multiple ethnic groups and see the world as a classroom. We seek a math teacher who has strong organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, and establishes and maintains effective relationships with students, peers and parents. Collaborating with others to achieve the vision, mission and overall goals of the school is critical.
Essential Job Functions All functions are performed in accordance with established policies, procedures, safety and environmental regulations, facility and computer security policies and procedures. Functions are subject to change from time to time to meet the needs of the organization. Current essential functions include the following:
plans and implement the IB program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of students and complies with IB standards, Common Core State Standards plus the SFPS Board of Education goals and objectives.
Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
Translates lesson plans into developmentally appropriate learning experiences. Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior to achieve an effective learning atmosphere.
Evaluates pupils' academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records and prepares progress reports.
Identifies pupil needs and makes appropriate referrals and develops strategies for individual education plans (IEPs).
Plans and supervises class projects, field trips, visits by guest speakers, or other experiential activities, and guide students in learning from those activities.
Is available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day and communicates with parents regularly to inform about their child’s academic progress.
Sponsors extracurricular activities such as clubs, student organizations, and academic contests.
Provides individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of the student.
Creates an environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, interest centers and exhibits of student's work.
Collaborates with peers to enhance the instructional environment.
Collaborates with peers to develop common assessments.
Models professional and ethical standards when dealing with students, parents, peers, and community.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
