Speech Language Pathologist 2017-2018
Job Goal: The job of Speech and Language Pathologist is done for the purpose/s of identifying students with communication disabilities; planning and implementing appropriate treatment to minimize adverse impact on student success; recommending treatment plans; and providing direction to Communication Therapy Aides.
Essential Functions: - Assesses students' communication skills (e.g. progress reports, activity logs, billing information, treatment plans, required documentation, quarterly reports, screening results, etc.) for the purpose of identifying communication disorders, determining program eligibility and developing recommendations for treatment.
- Collaborates with a variety of groups and/or individuals (e.g. progress reports, activity logs, billing information, treatment plans, required documentation, quarterly reports, screening result, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information, resolving issues and providing services in compliance with established guidelines.
- Coordinates meetings and processes for eligible students (e.g. testing/screening, IEPs, parent conferences, pre-referral staffing, etc.) for the purpose of presenting evaluation results, developing treatment plans, and/or providing training to parents/students/staff.
- Develops treatment plans, interventions and/or educational materials for the purpose of minimizing the adverse impact of communication disorders in compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Instructs eligible students in the use of appropriate communication technologies (e.g. hearing aids, FM systems, augmentative communication devices, etc.) for the purpose of minimizing the adverse educational impact of communication disorders in accordance with established guidelines and legal requirements.
- Instructs assigned support staff for the purpose of providing information on communicative disorders, use of assistive devices and feeding techniques and/or implementing prescribed treatment plans.
- Interprets medical reports within the scope of Speech/Language Pathologist's experience and goals for the purpose of providing information and/or ensuring that treatment/intervention plans are appropriate.
- Maintains files and/or records (e.g. progress reports, activity logs, billing information, treatment plans, required documentation, quarterly reports, screening results, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of information as required for reference and/or compliance.
- Participates in meetings, workshops, and seminars (e.g. progress reports, activity logs, billing information, treatment plans, required documentation, quarterly reports, screening results, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information.
- Prepares a wide variety of written materials (e.g. activity logs, correspondence, memos, treatment plans, Medicaid billings, reports, required documentation, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.
- Provides speech and language therapy to students for the purpose of minimizing the adverse impact of speech and language disorders on student success.
- Researches resources and methods (e.g. intervention and treatment techniques, assessment tools and methods, community resources, etc.) for the purpose of determining the appropriate approach for addressing students' needs.
- Responds to inquiries (e.g. parents, teachers, other school staff, students, etc.) for the purpose of providing information and/or referral as appropriate.
- Transports supplies and equipment to a variety of sites for the purpose of ensuring the availability of items as needed.
- Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Qualifications: - Masterís degree in Speech Language Pathology or related field
- SLP Credential from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment
- Certificate of Clinical Competence form the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. (CFY considered)
- Evidence of successful experience in the evaluation and treatment of young children with communication needs.
- Must possess a valid driverís license and reliable vehicle
Communication / Organization: - Maintains communication with school personnel, and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action which will meet the educational needs of students.
- Utilizes existing technology effectively in the performance of duties.
- Performs other related work as required.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Language Skills: Ability to read and analyze and interpret general professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, general curriculum and learning theories, correspondence, and protocols. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, parents, students, and the general public.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, walk, stand and talk or hear. Ability to work in a variety of home and community settings including the ability to ascend/descent stairs. Ability to work comfortably in a variety of positions including seated on the floor. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee must occasionally carry or push items of 20 pounds such as pushing on a bike or wheelchair, or moving/rearranging furniture. While performing the duties of the job the employee visits studentsí homes. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud and is a standard acceptable level for this environment. Is directly responsible for studentsí safety, work output and well-≠being. Potential exposure to biological hazards and other conditions. May face hazards on the road traveling to and from home visits.
Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to Early Intervention Program;; ability to plan and implement activities/strategies/interventions based on the needs of the students. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents and community;; ability to speak clear and concisely in written or oral communication.
Terms of Employment: 186 days
Salary: Based on KCKPS Salary Schedule
FLSA Status: EXEMPT
Reports To: Director of Special Education
Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with Board of Education policy
