English Language Learner Tutor
Calendar Days: Part-time Position
Description: The English Language (EL) tutor is responsible for implementing the Virginia Department of Education's English Language Proficiency instructional standards to students whose primary language is other than English. The tutor works under the supervision of the division EL Coordinator, building administration and EL Lead Teacher providing teaching and/or training services to EL students to promote English language acquisition for academic success. The position may involve more than one school location.
This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects, and some light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise and hazards.
Essential Functions / Typical Tasks: Teaching in an elementary, secondary or vocational school instructional program and class environment favorable to learning; teaching a broad range of subjects or specialized subject matter(s) with emphasis on English acquisition; teaching special needs students; motivating students to achieve maximum potential;
Assists with teaching the Standards of Learning (SOL) and aligns curriculum with SOLs with emphasis on English acquisition;
Develops lesson plans and instructional materials; develops individual programs for special needs students;
Translates lesson plans into learning experiences;
Instructs students in area(s) of language acquisition and completes documents as specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district;
Adapts teaching materials and methods to develop relevant sequential assignments that guide and challenge students;
Assesses and evaluates needs of students; provides instruction in individual or group sessions; establishes and maintains standards of behavior;
Formulates and implements behavior modification programs for special needs students;
Integrates subject area content and technology with emphasis on English acquisition;
Identifies student needs; assists with assessment of needs;
Administers standardized tests and English proficiency assessments in accordance with established procedures;
Encourages students to think independently, develop and express original ideas;
Communicates with students, student counselors and parents through conferences and other means;
Maintains professional competence through in-service education and self-selected professional books and professional materials;
Assists with eligibility procedures;
Performs related tasks as required;
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of subject(s) taught; thorough knowledge of elementary and middle school principles, practices and procedures; thorough knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching, including differentiation of instruction for English Learner (EL) students; thorough knowledge of school division rules, regulations, and procedures; ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior; ability to deliver articulate, oral presentations and written reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, students, and parents; ability to serve as liaison between schools and the English Learner program.
Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in an acceptable field. The minimum requirement is a bachelorís degree. Possession of a teacherís license recognized by the Commonwealth of Virginia is preferred.
