Grand Rapids Public Schools is seeking qualified applicants for the following position(s):
Special Education Teacher - Hearing Impaired
Location: Various/To Be Determined
Additional Information: Position Title: Special Education Teacher –Deaf and Hard of Hearing
Bargaining Unit: Grand Rapids Education Association (GREA)
Salary: $38,000 and comprehensive benefits package
Earning Days: 195 or as annually determined by the contract

Job Summary: Instructs children with hearing impairment in activities designed to promote social, physical, and intellectual growth through the development of auditory, language and speech skills.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: - Plans individual and group activities to stimulate growth in language and listening, academic, social and motor skills.
- Develops and uses instructional materials suitable for verbal instruction of pupils with wide range of mental, physical, and emotional maturates.
- Develops activities for student growth within age/grade appropriate learning standards.
- Develops speech skills with children who are deaf or hard of hearing.
- Has knowledge and experience in developing language skills using Auditory-Oral methods such as: Expressions, patterning, and Auditory – Oral Patterns.
- Plans and implements goals of the Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
- Understand the relevance of Hearing Age (HA) and Language Age (LA) to a student’s progress.
- Demonstrates sound understanding of an audiogram and how it relates to development of speech, language, listening and reading skills.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the degrees of hearing loss and its implications of learning.
- Promotes parents’ participation and involvement in educational activities provided for their children.
- Has knowledge and experience with current technology including: digital hearing aids, cochlear implants and micro-links personal FM/Roger Systems.
- Has knowledge and training in auditory – verbal practices.
- Develops and implements individual and group activities based on auditory- verbal practices.
- Has a sound understanding of the hierarchy of listening skills.
- Knows how to develop listening skills as the primary mode of learning with children who are deaf or hard of hearing.
- Knows normal child development.
- Educate and trains parents to facilitate listening and language within their daily routines through regularly scheduled individual parent education meetings at school or/and in the home.
- Develops in each pupil an awareness of his worth as an individual and his role in his family and community.
- Provides appropriate climate to establish and reinforce acceptable pupil behavior, attitudes, and social skills.
- Cooperates and seeks assistance from other professional staff members.
- Creates an effective environment for learning.
- Provides individual and small group instructions designed to meet individual needs of pupils in communication skills, health habits, physical skills, and development of self-concepts.
- Plans and coordinates the work of paraprofessional, parents, and volunteers in the classroom.
- Communicates regularly with parents by means of newsletters, notes, phone calls and individual parent conferences.
- Interprets school program to parents in order to strengthen parental understanding the individual pupils’ needs
- Has sound understanding of the grief process and how it relates to working with families of children who are deaf or hard of hearing
Supervisory Responsibilities: The employee supervises students and para-educator for instructional purposes.
Education and/or Experience: Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) degree in education with endorsement in Special Education
Language Skills: Ability to read and analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff and the general public.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exits. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Other Skills and Abilities: - Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program
- Ability to plan and implement lessons based on assessment and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents and community
- Ability to speak clearly and concisely in written and oral communication

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The noise level in the work environment is usually loud to moderate. Work is performed indoors although there will be required outdoor activities. The employee is directly responsible for the safety, well-being and work output of students.
MENTAL FUNCTIONS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to compare, analyze, communicate both orally and in writing, copy, coordinate, instruct, compute, synthesize, evaluate, use interpersonal skills, compile and negotiate.
