School Nutrition Services - Director

Employment Location: Chesapeake Public Schools

Salary: 82,155.00-97,661.00 USD

Calendar Days: 10 + 1.5 Calendar Months

General Definition and Conditions of Work:
Performs complex professional and difficult administrative work planning, implementing and supervising all school nutrition activities; does related work as required. Work is performed under general supervision. Supervision is exercised over all department personnel.

This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects; work requires fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.

Essential Functions / Typical Tasks:
Plans, administers and directs the divisionís school nutrition services programs in accordance with applicable local, state and federal regulations;

Coordinates and plans school nutrition departmentís activities with building principals and other school departments;

Formulates proposals for the development and revision of policies pertaining to the school nutrition services operation; and establishes/monitors procedures for the preparation, handling and serving food and other related procedures;

Directs the planning and development of nutritious, high quality, school breakfast/lunch/supper/snack and summer food service meals;

Oversees all special function catering and assists the supervisor with implementation.

Develops and monitors the school nutrition budget;

Analyzes expenditure and revenue data for trends, program needs and revenue projections in school nutrition; maintains constant cost analysis of School Nutrition.

Interviews, hires, supervises, evaluates, provides professional development opportunities for employees, and directs the work of school nutrition services department personnel.

Directs the preparation of reports as required by federal, state and local regulatory agencies and ensures accurate record keeping. Directly supervises the Free and Reduced Meal application program. Handles parent concerns and principal's questions in relation to free and reduced applications.

Writes bid specifications for equipment, food and supplies. Interviews equipment and supply representatives to obtain information and samples of new or prospective items, product lines and trends in school feeding. Tests products for future use when appropriate.

Monitors warehouse maintenance and inventory functions;

Oversees and maintains white fleet vehicle pool for school nutrition operation;

Establishes marketing efforts for the divisionís child nutrition services program to ensure that the public is informed of planned school menus and prices; and acts as a liaison with parents and the general public to resolve complaints and improve customer relations.

Plans use of technology to improve efficiency of departments and school cafeterias;

Attends system-wide principal and staff meetings to represent department and serves as the community liaison for nutrition and health related initiatives;

Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities;

Performs any other related duties as assigned by the assistant superintendent, human resources and school services or other appropriate administrators.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of the practices, procedures and regulations relating to school nutrition programs; thorough knowledge of food quality and values; thorough knowledge of the principles and practices used in ordering, receiving and storing food in large quantities; thorough knowledge of budgeting and accounting practices and procedures; thorough knowledge of principles used in the purchase, maintenance, distribution and inventory control of materials; ability to plan and supervise the work of a large group of employees; ability to prepare complex and technical reports; ability to express ideas clearly, orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, school administrators and associates.

Education and Experience:
Must poses a Masterís degree in business administration, food services management, nutrition or related field and extensive experience in large scale, institutional food services management to include supervisory and budgeting experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the noted knowledge, skills and abilities. SNA (School Nutrition Association) SNS (School Nutrition Specialist) credential is preferred.

Special Requirements:
Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate license(s), certificate(s), and/or endorsement(s) for position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board.
