Chief Academic Officer
Location: Academic Office
Purpose and Scope: Directs the district's overall academic program, including the creation, planning, evaluation, and improvement of curriculum and educational programs. Oversees all policies and programs related to curriculum and student instruction. Supports teachers and holds them accountable for academic performance. Oversees the functions of alternative schools, career and technical education, English Language Learners, guidance counseling, optional schools, science, technology, engineering, math, special education, curriculum and instruction, PreK, and exceptional children.
Essential Job Functions: 1. Drives district-wide multi-year planning and strategy for academics and instruction: Aligns the Academic Division with the district's overall strategic plan. Translates the district's vision into concrete academic benchmarks. Establishes district-wide instructional goals. Directs, oversees, and administers the delivery of academic programs and instructional strategies to increase student achievement across the district. Ensures curriculum aligns with national standards of excellence and supports the diversity of the student body. Ensures academic strategy aligns with the multiple achievement paths model adopted by the district, with the growth of the state Achievement School District (ASD) and new charter schools.
2. Develops and evaluates academic programs and student achievement: In conjunction with Planning and Accountability, establishes, reviews, evaluates and adapts instructional standards to academic programs to ensure they are successful in advancing student learning. Leverages data to improve academic programs and instructional techniques. Advises on the development of a comprehensive curriculum to meet the diverse needs of the district's students, including. alternative schools; career and technical education; English Language Learners; guidance counseling, optional schools, science, technology, engineering, math, special education, curriculum and instruction, PreK, and exceptional children.
3. Drives school improvement: Provides direction for the improvement of student achievement in grades Pre-K to12 district-wide. Develops, organizes, and implements models of technical assistance for schools with low student achievement and models of continuous improvement for schools with average to high student achievement. Works with Planning and Accountability to recommend strategies for improving school performance.
4. Builds teacher capacity: Drives continuous improvement in instruction by building teacher capacity and supporting, in conjunction with Talent Management, the recruitment and development of teaching talent. Supports Talent Management in the execution of the teacher talent strategies. Develops policies and programs to optimize and improve instructional quality across all grades. Supports the growth of professional development and other teacher support programs to increase the overall quality of instruction.
5. Oversees professional development: Develops a process to provides effective professional development to retain the best talent in schools. Adheres to all relevant district Human Resources policies.
6. Enforces accountability and quality control measures. Ensures compliance with all federal, state, local, and district policies and procedures related to the district's academic programs.
7. Supports the overall vision and leadership of the district and the division. Serves as a key contributor in the Superintendent's cabinet to set the overall vision and provide leadership to the district. Oversees the functions alternative schools; career and technical education; English Language Learners; guidance counseling, optional schools, science, technology, engineering, math, special education, curriculum and instruction, PreK, and exceptional children. Manages these functions effectively. Manages the budget for the division. Sets and enforces financial metrics and targets. Establishes standards for selection, hiring, training, performance evaluations and ongoing professional development for the division within the overall philosophy of the district.
8. Performs related responsibilities as required or directed.
Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Masterís Degree in Educational Administration and Supervision or a closely related field plus a minimum of ten (10) years of successful experience in a top leadership position involving instructional programming in a major school district or any equivalent combination of education, training, and/or paid, exempt level directly relevant experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this position for a total of sixteen (16) years. Valid Tennessee School Administrator's license, along with other certifications required by state and local policies (e.g., Tennessee professional teacher's license). Public education experience preferred. Doctorate degree in Educational Leadership, or closely related field preferred.
Degree Equivalency Formula:
Bachelorís Degree = 4 years plus required years of experience.
Masterís Degree = 6 years plus required years of experience.

Physical Requirements and Working Environment: Physical Demands: Requires sedentary work involving standing or walking for brief periods, exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular basis; and some dexterity in operating office equipment; must be able to use hands and fingers
Unavoidable Hazards: The position is exposed to no unusual environmental hazards.
Sensory (ADA) Requirements: The position requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities.
