In accordance with the Agreement between the Detroit Federation of Teachers and the Detroit Public Schools Community District, the following vacancy is announced:

The School:
Marygrove High School is part of a new, one-of-a-kind K-12 institution serving students in the city of Detroit. It is a special collaboration between Detroit Public School Community District and the University of Michigan, housed at the historic Marygrove College Campus. Our high school program is designed for students interested in pursuing careers in engineering, computer technology, or related science fields. It introduces students to the scope, rigor, and discipline of engineering through exposure to complex problems and authentic experiences.

We are looking for successful and innovative teachers that are interested in being founding team members—trail blazers--of this special school. Applicants must be ready to think creatively about teaching and learning, work hard to support students to solve complex problems, and care deeply about all students.

The Role and Core Duties:
A Master Teacher is an exceptional practitioner who leads from the classroom and cultivates their peers’ ability to deliver excellent instruction and increase student achievement. Master Teachers are not administrators, nor do they take on administrative roles. Instead, they teach students half of the day to model best practices and generate useful materials for their school, such as exemplar lessons and student work samples. The other half of the day, they provide a range of support to their peers, such as leading 1-on-1 observation and coaching, facilitating collaborative time, co-planning with small teams, mentoring new or student teachers, or even modeling in other teachers’ classrooms.

The goal of a Master Teacher is to improve a team of teachers’ abilities to effectively plan for and deliver high-quality instruction in pursuit of better outcomes for students. By creating distributive leadership structures in schools, Master Teachers — in collaboration with school leaders — will increase opportunities for feedback and growth to drive increased student achievement, while building their own capacity as leaders.

Master Teachers will earn a stipend of $5,000 annually.

Must possess a Bachelor’s Degree from an institution accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools or an equivalent agency.

Successful candidates who possess degrees beyond a Bachelor’s Degree will be eligible for the appropriate salary differential.

Must possess a valid Michigan Teaching Certificate or Michigan Temporary Teaching Authorization in English Language Arts.

Must have at least three years of teaching experience with Highly Effective or Effective (or equivalent) ratings.
