Salary: $56,368.00 - $111,245.00

Additional Information:
Founding year position for the 2018-20 school year. Planning year hours for the 2018-19 school year available. Start date to be determined. Preference for applicants who have experience starting and developing a school library.

FLSA STATUS: Exempt Plus additional days as provided by the HEA bargaining agreement

SUMMARY: The school librarian is a teacher, consultant and information specialist. He or she effectively teaches information skills through formal lessons cooperatively planned with the classroom teacher and through informal contacts with students using the library media center facilities. As a consultant, the librarian participates in curricular projects and is active in selecting and evaluating instructional media and educational technology. As an information specialist, he or she assesses information, provides adequate resources and assists in locating and using materials.

CONTEXT AND MISSION: Highline Public Schools serves approximately 19,000 students in the communities of Burien, Des Moines, Normandy Park, SeaTac, Boulevard Park and White Center Heights in Washington State. Starting in the fall of 2012, the Highline community came together to develop a five-year strategic plan outlining the communityís bold goals and big dreams for its children. The planís promise is that every student in Highline Public Schools is known by name, strength, and need, and graduates prepared for the future they choose. The collective commitment embodied in the plan is grounded in the communityís deep belief that Highline students are capable of reaching the planís ambitious goals and is driven by studentsí aspirations for their future. The foundation of our plan informs decisions regarding our professional and organizational practices. - Equity. We will reduce achievement and opportunity gaps by using culturally responsive, inclusive, standards-based instruction. - Relationships. We will increase student success by supporting their social-emotional and academic needs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. This list is meant to be representative, not exhaustive. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. - Plan, implement, and evaluate library media program and services in cooperation with faculty. - Provide instruction, guidance and reference assistance to students and staff in the selection and utilization of print and non-print materials. - Provide training and/or assistance to staff on integration of library/information resources in the curriculum. - Consult with staff on effective media, including computer, strategies. Media Role: 1.1 selects media and equipment consistent with the District's selection policy and appropriate to the curriculum; 1.2 selects a balance of media to meet a variety of learning styles and teaching strategies; 1.3 maintains a well-organized learning resource center for effective use of media; 1.4 provides maintenance for materials and equipment; 1.5 develops and implements a program for the integration of materials and equipment into the learning experience;

JOB DESCRIPTION: SCHOOL LIBRARIAN 1.6 identifies needs for locally produced materials; 1.7 relates services from the District level to meet building instructional needs. Program Planning: 2.1 creates a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere for students and teachers in the Learning Resources Center; 2.2 directs aides, volunteers and student help with efficiency and understanding; 2.3 develops program objectives and works toward their achievement. Teaching: 3.1 utilizes teaching techniques which are consistent with the selected objective. Such techniques will: 3.1.1 make provision for differences in ability among students, 3.1.2 provide for the previous knowledge, abilities, and interests of the class, 3.1.3 makes effective use of instructional equipment, materials, and resource personnel, 3.1.4 provide a variety of activities in keeping with the maturity and attention span of the students, 3.1.5 implement lesson plans but permit flexibility; 3.2 gives explanations, assignments and directions clearly; 3.3 makes reasonable and appropriate assignments; 3.4 motivates students by making lessons interesting and challenging; 3.5 helps students to develop acceptable work habits and study skills; 3.6 evaluates daily lessons and units of study by assessing student achievement of objectives; 3.7 provides guidance and assistance for students. Other Functions - Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit and supporting student learning objectives.


Valid Washington State Teacher certificate with appropriate endorsement Completed two years of successful classroom teaching

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master's degree from an American Library Association (A.L.A.) accredited library school or a comparable Master's level program, or 30 graduate hours in library science. Recent training and experience preferred

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT: Criminal background clearance

KNOWLEDGE OF: Planning, administering and evaluating the library-media program Analysis of user characteristics and information needs.

Use of principles for disseminating and using information and media Materials and information services appropriate for grade level including reference and bibliography Organization of information (cataloging and classification) Selection and evaluation of print and non-print materials Understanding of intellectual and emotional needs of students Techniques for assisting users to produce and use media School board policies and procedures

ABILITY TO: Communicate effectively verbally and in writing Operate a microcomputer and related software Maintain effective working relationships with other people Work collaboratively with school and central office administrators, parents, and community members Demonstrate understanding of and experience with cultural competence Plan, execute, and evaluate library media instructional program (library/information skills); reading and listening guidance; storytelling and story writing; and resource based teaching Work with whole language programs; special ed. students, mainstreaming and technology-based classroom instructional program Demonstrate willingness to work with staff and students in providing integration of curriculum Comply with school board policies and follow administrative procedures
