Elementary METCO Guidance Counselor

This full-time position will support the personal and developmental needs of both Boston and Needham resident students of color and their families as well as provide a range of counseling services to a caseload of students in grades K-5 in both general and special education. The counselor will actively support the academic achievement, cultural, and social/emotional needs of all students and families. As a member of the Mitchell Faculty, NPS Guidance Department, and NPS METCO Departments, this combined position will develop strong and collaborative relationships with students, faculty, staff, parents and act as an advocate for the Mitchell METCO program and community of color.

Essential Functions and Duties of the Position:
The essential functions and duties listed below are intended as illustration of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.

Manage a caseload of students with and without disabilities, providing individual, small group, and class-wide lessons and support.
Serves as a member of the Mitchell School Guidance department and attends Mitchell faculty meetings and Student Support Teams as directed by the principal.
Serves as a member of the NPS Guidance Department and attends monthly guidance department meetings.
Serves as a member of the METCO Department and attends METCO department meetings.
Monitors the academic performance of METCO students/students of color as well as develops and implements strategies to enhance student opportunities and promote student academic achievement.
Provides consultation and guidance to colleagues in the area of cultural competency.
Provides culturally competent consultation to school-based crisis intervention teams.
Works in conjunction with the METCO Director and school administration to establish programs that will broaden the cultural lens of all Needham Public School students in grades K-5.
Meets regularly with teachers and staff to promote the academic and social progress of Boston and Needham resident students of color in grades K-5.
Participates in parent/teacher conferences and special education team meetings, as needed.
Works with the METCO Middle School Coordinator to develop and coordinate the appropriate transitioning programs for students in the METCO program.
Serves as liaison between the student, schools, and families to facilitate positive communication and understanding.
Assists with outreach and coordination with outside agencies, as needed.
Other responsibilities as assigned.

Education and Experience:
Masterís degree required in Education, Counseling, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, or other related field.
3-5 years of experience preferred, particularly in a school environment and with students and families of diverse backgrounds.

Skills, Abilities & Knowledge:

Must have experience with, and be committed to, helping students of color achieve academic and social emotional success.
Must demonstrate a commitment to the district goals for the METCO program/students of color and work effectively towards meeting those goals each and every day.
Must be a highly motivated, self-starter who can work independently.
Must have well-established communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to share information and resources as appropriate.
Must work in partnership with teachers and administration.
Must demonstrate a high degree of skill in working with a wide variety of constituents including school district employees, administrators, students, and families.
Ability to exercise sound judgment and a high degree of diplomacy in responding to and resolving issues and problems in a highly professional manner.
Flexibility to meet changes in work needs and demands.
