EL Teacher
School Year: 2025-2026
Location: Minnieville Elementary School
Job Summary:
This position accelerates the learning or acquisition of English for English language learners (ELLs) and the academic content of math, language arts, science, and social studies in order for LEP students to achieve passing classroom expectations, passing SOL scores, and meet graduation requirements. This position provides cross-cultural information about the American school system and being a student in an American school for LEP students. This position serves as a liaison between the LEP student and all his/her classroom teachers and their families and the school. This position implements all ESOL program procedures in order to be in compliance with legal responsibilities. This position provides leadership and consultation as the second language expert/specialist to all staff in a school.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
•
Knowledge of second language acquisition and acculturation processes
•
Knowledge of research, legal requirements, program models, and methodological approaches specific to multilingual learners
•
Knowledge of techniques for teaching English, reading, and content to multilingual learners
•
Knowledge of approved assessments used for program placement and monitoring of student achievement
•
Knowledge of administrative procedures in implementing a formal EL program that is in compliance with all laws regarding requirements for English Learners
•
Native or near-native proficiency in all the skills of understanding, speaking, reading, and writing in English is required
•
Bilingualism in the language most represented by the students is an asset, not a requirement, unless the program model is a bilingual one, in which case, native or near-native proficiency in all skills of the target language of the program is required
•
Excellent interpersonal skills in order to collaborate with all staff in a school and provide ongoing professional learning and leadership as a specialist in second language acquisition.
Education:
Bachelor's Degree
Possession of a collegiate professional, postgraduate professional, or appropriate vocational certificate/license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia with endorsement in ESL; must be eligible for the Virginia State Certification Program.
